Childcare First Aid Course

This OSH recognised workplace first aid course is designed to motivate and equip a person with the skills necessary to be a confident first responder in a variety of situations.  It has a particular focus on childcare and  can be further tailored towards your needs. It is ideal for parents, nannies and babysitters. Attendees are trained to a high standard of patient care with both instructor and peer assessment throughout the course. The course includes practical scenario work so that attendees gain competency with the various First Aid techniques.

  • CPR - adult/ child / infant.
  • Choking - adult / child infant - conscious and unconscious.

  • External and internal bleeding.
  • Shock
  • Recovery position.
  • Burns and scalds.
  • Illness assessment.
  • Poisoning.
  • Fractures and dislocations.
  • Soft tissue injuries - sprains and strains.
  • Wound care.
  • Head, neck and spinal injuries.
  • Medical conditions
  • Seizure, asthma, allergies.
  • Heart conditions.
  • Stroke.
  • Infectious diseases - croup, meningitis, eppiglotitis.
  • Injury prevention

Each participant is provided with a comprehensive First Aid Manual (99 pages) that serves as a practical, quick-reference guide to first aid emergencies and contains relevant information and practical tips on the various topics covered during the course.


Course Duration


To meet NZQA requirements our Comprehensive Childcare First Aid course is now a minimum of 12 hours long, made up of 8 hours class time and 4 hours self-directed learning and written assessment.

Self-directed learning and written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.


NZQA Unit Standards


The Unit Standards associated with this course are:
  • 6400 - Manage first aid in emergency situations (level 3, 2 credits)
  • 6401 - Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
  • 6402 - Provide resuscitation level 2 (level 1, 1 credit)
We can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Learning if you provide us with your NZQA number.  If you do not yet have an NZQA Record of Learning, we can tell you who to contact for this.

Schedule and booking

Childcare First Aid courses are taught by request. The course typically runs from 8:30am to 4:30pm, but we are flexible and can arrange a course that suits your needs. Please contact us for more information.

The next Chilcare First Aid Course will be held on Saturday, 14 May 2011 at our premises in Hamilton East.

Course fee

The fee for the Comprehensive Workplace First Aid course is $175. Course costs include a comprehensive First Aid manual and morning and afternoon tea. We offer a $20 prompt payment discount, which reduces the course fee to $155. This discount applies if payment is received 5 days before the course date.
